Sports betting in the Netherlands is legal but strictly regulated. All games of chance, including sports betting, must hold a licence issued by the Kansspelautoriteit (Dutch Gambling Authority) or the relevant municipality (1).
The Kansspelautoriteit supervises both land-based and remote operators to ensure fairness, player protection, and prevention of fraud. Licensed providers must comply with rules on advertising, age verification, and anti-money laundering measures (1).
"The Dutch authorities seek to protect people who gamble, whether in casinos, lotteries, sports betting or online, against addiction and other problems. The authorities also seek to prevent crimes such as money laundering through illegal gambling operations."
The Remote Gambling Act (Wet kansspelen op afstand) came into force on April 1, 2021, allowing licensed operators to offer online sports betting under strict conditions. Secondary regulations cover advertising, spending limits, and duty-of-care requirements (2).
