Sports betting remains illegal in Georgia as of September 2025. Despite multiple legislative attempts since 2018, no sports betting bills have successfully passed into law (1). The Georgia General Assembly has introduced various measures including Senate Bill 386 and House Bill 686, but these have faced significant hurdles in achieving the necessary support for passage.
The current legislative efforts focus on requiring a constitutional amendment that would allow voters to decide on legalizing sports betting in the state (2). In March 2025, a Georgia House committee advanced legislation that would put the question directly to voters, representing the most recent attempt to move forward with legalization efforts.
"Georgia House committee advances legislation on March 5, 2025, that would let voters decide on legalizing online sports betting in the state."
Any future legalization would likely be administered through the Georgia Lottery Corporation, with proposed tax rates of 20-25% on adjusted gross gaming revenue. The legislative proposals have included provisions for 16 sports betting licenses, with some potentially going to professional sports teams. Even if legislation passes in the current session, actual sports betting operations may not launch until 2026 due to implementation requirements.
