Sports betting in the Czech Republic is regulated by Act No. 186/2016 Coll. on Gambling, effective January 1, 2017. Under this law, all sports betting—whether in physical venues or online—is legal only if operated by entities holding a valid licence from the Ministry of Finance (1).
To obtain and maintain a licence, operators must satisfy strict financial, technical and integrity requirements, including robust anti–money laundering controls and responsible gaming measures. Licences are time-limited and may be revoked for non-compliance (1).
"A new study has found that 10 EU Member States have strengthened their consumer protection rules for online gambling since 2018, including the introduction of new national self-exclusion registers in Czechia, the Netherlands, and Slovenia, but there is significant fragmentation in how Member States implement their consumer protection rules." (2)
Online sports betting is permitted only through the Ministry’s publicly published registry of approved remote operators. Bettors must be at least 18 years old, and winnings are subject to taxation. Enforcement is overseen by the Ministry’s Gaming Department, which continually reviews market developments and updates regulations as needed (2).
