Wagering on sports in Cyprus is governed by the Betting Law of 2012 (Law 106(I)/2012), which for the first time legalized and structured both retail and online betting activities under Republic of Cyprus jurisdiction (1).
An update in 2019 (Law 37(I)/2019) established the National Betting Authority (NBA) as an independent regulator with full financial autonomy. The NBA is charged with licensing, supervising, and enforcing standards across all permitted betting operations in the country (2).
“The National Betting Authority was established in 2012 following the adoption of the Betting Law 106(I)/2012. It is an independent authority both financially and politically, responsible for regulating, supervising and controlling betting activity in the Republic of Cyprus.”
Under the current regime, only holders of Class A (land-based) and Class B (online) licences may accept sports wagers, while casino-style games and electronic horse racing remain outside their remit. Licensed operators must enforce strict age verification and anti–money laundering protocols to protect consumers and maintain market integrity (1)(2).
