Sports betting in Burkina Faso was formally legalized by Law No. 024-96/AN of 1996, which established a regulatory framework for all games of chance and placed their oversight under the Ministry of Finance and the national lottery operator (2).
Today, the only authorized sports betting product on the market is offered by the Loterie Nationale du Burkina (LONAB) under its “Faso Pari” brand. This monopoly covers both land-based and digital channels, with mobile and tablet access managed directly by LONAB (1).
"Le 'Pari Sportif' est un produit dérivé de la gamme 'Faso Pari' logée dans l'architecture de marque de la LONAB. C'est un jeu d'argent qui se déroule sur le digital, notamment à travers le téléphone portable ou les tablettes." (1)
All operators must register with LONAB and comply with Burkina Faso’s General Tax Code (Article 223), which imposes a withholding tax on gambling winnings to be remitted by the lottery operator to the Treasury (1).
